Vi email , I see that Mister President is wanting to ban incradescent bubs incandescent light bulbs.
I thought they had already done that a couple years ago. Guess not.
Here's the deal - at the Alehouse, we have CFL's in all places that have lights on for a long period of time. They burn less energy and save me money. I like that.
However, in places where the lights go on and off relatively quickly, like the bathroom, garage door opener, closets, etc, we have regular bulbs, as the CFLs have a drastically shorter lifespan when turned on and off frequently. They also shouldn't be used with dimmers, or used outdoors.
The priorities of this administration amazes me sometimes.
Conservative Scalawag has more.
As for the title, it's a long story.

This weekend entry will probably start fading out, as I've pretty much settled on "my smoke", but I still have some odd sticks in the humidor, so it won't be going away completely.
- Wednesday - Rocky Patel Summer Collection 2008 Lancero - This was a pretty good smoke, but it got mushy on me about halfway down. It had an Ecuadoran wrapper, which was new to me. Like I said, it was pretty good, but I preferred the Spring 2009 to this one.
And here is the rest of it.

Looks like Squeaky's having a bit of an issue with them.
She talked about this at the meet up last week, and I have to compliment her on her ability to keep calm. From what she said then, there are one of two scenarios playing out here.
1. New to business, the company didn't use tracking or insurance when shipping the knife.
2. She's been snookered.
They contacted me a while back, offering me the same deal. While I wasn't in need of a new knife, I did put their link of the sidebar. I may pull it down, we'll see how it goes.

So, Customs is trying to change the definition of "switchblade" in order to ban 80% of the pocket knives being sold today.
Via Sebastian, we see that some in DC are trying to stop this (scroll down to "feature"):
Late news yesterday afternoon that a pair of Congressmen have decided to apply the nuclear option - restrictive amendments to their budgets, to let the Department of Homeland Security know they don't like the proposed Customs and Border Patrol measure designed to change the definition of a switchblade knife. The new CBP definition, if adopted, would basically cut the modern knife industry to the quick as approximately eighty percent of knives currently in production would fall into the definition of switchblade because of their assisted-opening feature.
Representatives Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and Walt Minnick (D-Idaho) have co-sponsored an amendment to the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill to restrict funds to the proposed CBP rule on switchblades.

So, I finally carved out a nice block of time to devote strictly to this cigar. Good idea, as it took me an hour and a half to smoke it. That was intentional, though. I really took it slow, to make sure I got everything I could out of the cigar.
It certainly delivered.
Just like the last time I had a 1990, the first third of the cigar was fairly mellow, and it steadily built in flavor over time. This time, however, the notes were more coffee and cocoa powder, rather than chocolate and cherries. Not unusual, as from what I've read and experienced, different shapes tend to have different flavor profiles.
Will I buy more?
Let me put it to you this way, I'm seriously considering buying a second humidor and stocking up, these sticks were that good. That, and these being seconds, the price was unbelievable.

I've never posted about my birthday before, not directly. It's just not something I do, but this time is the exception.
Today is my birthday, and I'm 50 years old. Wow, that's a milestone, isn't it?
I have to say, with all the ups and downs I've experienced over the last half-century, I'm happy with my life and where I'm at now. The future's looking pretty good, too.
It's kind of liberating, being fifty. For one thing, I'm no longer constrained by fashion. Black socks and loafers with Bermuda shorts? No problem! Big straw hat and Hawaiian shirt? Bring 'em on! Hell, I'm fifty, I don't have to worry about looking cool! Where can I get those big wrap around sunglasses?
The downside? Pants are mandatory (sorry, Robb), and now I wear sneakers so my feet won't hurt, instead of being ready for a spontaneous game of Frisbee or something.
Thanks for reading this, I figure if I make it another 25 years I'll make another birthday post, as pants will once again become optional attire.
Y'all take care, I see some kids on my lawn....

This came up Saturday at the Memphis area blogger meetup, and I said I'd post on it:
See their website here. Also, it looks like they are doing something tonight:
WHO ARE MODERN WHIGS?Established in 1833, the Whigs are one of America's oldest mainstream political parties. We were the original party of Abraham Lincoln and four other U.S. Presidents.
Revived by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, the grassroots movement has quickly attracted tens of thousands of members. We represent moderate voters from all walks of life who cherry-pick between traditional Democratic and Republican ideals in what has been called the Modern Whig Philosophy.
This includes general principles of fiscal responsibility, strong national defense and bold social progression.
These folks bear watching, in a good way.21 JUN 2009
Founded by Iraq/Afghanistan veterans, the Modern Whig movement has gained traction with tens of thousands of mainstream voters who value common sense, rational solutions ahead of unproductive bickering and ideology. Our strategy has been to be savvy while maintaining our very realistic view of what we are trying to accomplish. Tonight at 8 ET/7CT, we will outline a detailed plan to include talking points, candidate assistance, and commitment to continuing on a mainstream, non-fringe approach that caters to disenchanted Republicans and moderate Democrats. To participate in this one-hour online Father's Day meeting, please RSVP here.

- Sunday - Conuco Robusto - This one is made by Rocky Patel, is offered as a more affordable smoke, and is only available online at Famous. Reviews were all across the spectrum on this one, some were calling is the best cigar for the price anywhere, others saying is was a "dog rocket"*.
I figured at fifteen bucks for five, it was worth a try. I have to say, for the price, those are some pretty good smokes. The wrapper had a sweetness to it that I assume is a naturally occurring thing. Although they are not maduros (habano wrapper), they were somewhat similar. Fairly smooth and not disagreeable at all.
- Speaking of Rocky Patel, the Vintage 1990 "seconds" showed up this week. They're spending a few days in the humidor to get acclimated, but my initial inspection showed them to be a nice cigar, not blemished or faulty. They are box pressed, and are not loose or squishy in any way. I opted for the "torpedo" shape this time around, as robustos are too short, and I sometimes don't have time for a Churchill. I'll probably fire one up Friday night, so this posting should have my review, such as it is.
- Wednesday - CAO Criollo - I bought this one because I read somewhere that a criollo is "corojo light", and I'll have to agree with that assertion. If you're having difficulty getting into a corojo, then this cigar is for you. Of course, I'm a fan of maduros and, to a lesser extent, natural wrappers, so while I can see its appeal, it's not for me. I do have to say, in my brief exposure to the cigar world, CAO has the best-burning cigars I've seen so far.
Update - Didn't get to the Patel yesterday like I thought. I'll do another post once I do.
* that's cigar speak for "poop".

So, what should I get myself for Father's Day?
Glenlivet Nadurra
Short of becoming Master Distiller, Nadurra is the closest you can come to drinking straight from a cask at The Glenlivet Distillery. Unlike most Scotch, Nadurra is non chill-filtered, resulting in a slight cloudiness with the addition of water - a traditional and perfectly natural effect.

Driving away your customers is a bad idea.
The Beale Street Merchants Association and Performa Entertainment announced Wednesday that they will ban guns on Beale Street.
[snip]
... security will be supplied with metal detector wands at every entry point onto Beale.
Or, they turned away when they were treated like criminals, and will defend themselves. I guess it's up to the theives to decide which is which.Did you hear that Memphis gang bangers and criminals:
ANYONE LEAVING THE BEALE STREET AREA HAS BEEN CHECKED FOR WEAPONS, AND ARE COMPLETELY DEFENSELESS. IF THEY HAD WEAPONS THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ON BEALE. THEIR DEFENSELESSNESS HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY SECURITY GUARDS. Meaning they are easy pickings for you.

Amazon isn't the only place where ridiculous items get a fisk/review. Behold the Davidoff Pyramid Humidor:
FSS Price: $2,921.99Of course, the point of this post are the reviews:
Retail Price: $3,075.00
I saw this on Famous, and thought to myself "Well Self; you've already lost $125k in equity on your home. "What's one more poor purchase decision gonna hurt?" "And besides, you'll just take it out of you're dead grandfather's social security checks you forge every month anyways." So if any of you fellow cigar smokers are in my position, I say "GO FOR IT!" :)
Then, there's this:
NOTE: If you purchase this humidor, ALL items in your order will ship UPS Ground for a flat $24.99 S&H charge. Free shipping is NOT available when purchasing a humidor.
I think I might have me a couple single malts tonight and see what I can come up with....

Had the strangest thing happen to me over the weekend - after finishing up some yardwork, I came inside and the kids told me I was bleeding.
Sure enough, there was a trail of blood down the side of my face. It had already dried, so I didn't think anything more of it - till I went to take a shower. There I had an allergic reaction similar to one I'd had after eating some suspect fish - my body flushed red, palms started itching, and while my breathing wasn't "troubled", I was aware that my passages weren't normal. I got a bit dizzy, so I laid down. Like I said, I'd had this happen before, so I knew I'd be fine in 30 minutes or so, and I was.
Of course, now I was wondering - what the hell caused this? I figured the blood was somehow involved, but I didn't see any sign of a wound. I figured I might have hit something toxic and got a bit of contact poisoning.
Then last night, I noticed what I thought was a mosquito bite on my left temple had evidence of a puncture mark. Something big enough to cause me to bleed, so now I'm pretty sure something stung me and scored what we D&Ders would call a critical hit - venom straight into a vein in my head. Lucky bastard.
Now my big concern is - is this a one-off thing? Spending much of my life in rural settings, I've been stung by just about everything that flies - more than once. Never had a problem. Now, I've had a minor episode of anaphylaxis. Not a good thing.
So, my question is - am I now allergic to stings? Is it possible this was a one-off lucky shot by some flying bastard? If I am now allergic, will the next episode be more severe?
I am going to talk to my doctor about this, obviously, but I'd like to know what you all think.
Update - Thanks for the advice. I'll be seeing the doc tomorrow.

Oliva "Serie O" Petit Perfecto - this one is a Nicaraguan "puro", meaning all components came from Nicaragua. It wasn't a maduro, so, like all the other non-maduro types, it wasn't for me. Mostly notes of cedar, although I got a little bit of menthol in the middle. I'm beginning to understand these types a little better, And I can see where these would be an excellent choice, depending on the circumstances.
Rocky Patel Edge Maduro Torpedo - I should have done some research on this one first. If I had, I would have taken note of the various ways of saying "This cigar is not for beginners". It's most definitely a cigar for advanced smokers. The first half was manageable, but then it became overwhelming and, for me, unsmokable.
Padron 2000 Maduro Robusto- this was a nice smoke, definitely worth a second look. The last third didn't impress me like the CAO or Patel 1990, but I can see instances where I wouldn't really want it to.
All in all, a pretty good week. I've taken a bit of a gamble and sprung for a bundle of Patel 1990 "seconds", meaning for whatever reason, they were unworthy of being called a 1990. The web site said it was mainly due to cosmetic imperfections. If that's the case, I've found the ideal smoke, as looks don't matter much to me. Price does, though, and these will run me about half of what a 1990 usually costs.
We'll see....

What is "reverse discrimination"? Beats me.
I can tell you what it doesn't mean. It doesn't mean, like this headline (and many like it) says - anytime a person of Caucasian descent experiences disparate treatment and files suit, somehow they are in a different situation than someone identified as a minority under the same circumstances.
Discrimination is discrimination. Using terms like "reverse discrimination" only serves to reinforce the notion that equal treatment under the law is only for minorities and women - white guys need not apply.

Looks like it (emphasis mine):
The suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of one soldier and the critical injury of another at a Little Rock, Ark., Army recruiting booth today was under investigation by the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force since his return from Yemen, ABC News has learned. So, a Muslim extremist shoots two and kills one. I wonder what the soldiers' Commander in Chief has to say?
I'll have to echo baldilocks on this:I'll insert the quote here once I see it
Ok, he said something:
I am deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence against two brave young soldiers who were doing their part to strengthen our armed forces and keep our country safe. I would like to wish Quinton Ezeagwula a speedy recovery, and to offer my condolences and prayers to William Long’s family as they mourn the loss of their son.

I'm writing this mostly because of Tennessee's new attempt at creating yet another class of aggrieved/protected/special people. I'm against it, of course.
I don't think gay people need any more protection than what their favorite sidearm gives them. I don't think more "anti discrimination" laws will do any good, whether it applies to marriage, the workplace, or anywhere else.
Gay people can be subject to discrimination, of course they can. So can anybody else. A lot of it hinges on choices they make.
Here's the deal: if you act outside the norm, you are no longer "normal". It's not who you find sexually attractive, I truly believe you have no choice over that. I didn't, so why should you?
You do, however, have choices in your actions. If you do things most people don't, then you may very well be singled out for it and talked about/condemned/ostracised, depending on what you chose to do, and the relative up-tightedness of those around you. Holding hands with your lover might not provoke any reactions from onlookers, making out passionately at a baseball game might.
I don't care what you do with your sex partner. It's a private matter and I don't want to hear about it. That goes for non-gay people as well. Don't want to hear about it.
Do what you want in private, but there's nothing wrong with acting like a mature adult in public.
