More Please
Witnesses Use Hammer, Bat To Fight Off Rapist
Memphis police say a 17-year-old girl was walking to Montgomery Plaza Apartments when she was attacked by a 25-year-old man.
Witnesses say drivers saw the man on top of the girl, they say he had pulled down her pants and was trying to drag her into some bushes.
One man stopped and hit the man with hammer.
A female driver got out of her vehicle with a bat.
They were able to get the man off the girl, then he took off running.
Another woman who saw what was going on was able to flag down a police officer for help. This is exactly what needs to happen, every time.

A Prime Example of How Memphis Sucks
You can't do anything nice in this town because people just dick it up:
The short version? Memphis opened the Zoo to the public Tuesday afternoon - Free Admission to everybody. They want to do it every Tuesday afternoon, but after yesterday, you won't catch me or mine anywhere close:
Sitting on his porch on Overton Park Avenue at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, Clint Hermes saw a group of youngsters stomping through his neighbor’s yard.
Suddenly, two of the boys in the group of five or six pulled out pistols, Hermes said.
“A couple of guys just pulled out guns and for no apparent reason, just started shooting in the air,” Hermes said. “At that point, everybody just started running.”
In addition to those gunshots, fighting broke out in the large crowds, both at the zoo and nearby Overton Park, police said.

Fort Hood
I was going to post my thoughts on this, but it looks like Mike Vanderboegh already did. These two were particularly on my mind:
1. Although the state-run media and our man-child president have not mentioned the fact, the attackers were both muslim and American soldiers.
...
6. If the attackers had been "Christian Identity" types, does anyone reading this doubt that their religious beliefs, no matter how sick and twisted, would not have been trumpeted by the state-run media?
Finally, this:
Finally, let us pray for the victims and their families. These were soldiers killed in the line of duty by an insidious enemy. When I heard the initial reports, I thought it was a case of "dude freaked out from one too many deployments". I also figured it would be a good "in" for this administration to call for a complete pull out of troops.
Now that the facts are coming out, I wonder how they can spin this?
Here's what I know - We are at war. Our enemy hates us to our very core. They don't care if we're Republican, Democrat, or Independent. They don't care where we go to church, or if we go at all.
All they know is we are here, and in their eyes, we have no right to be.

Clearly, We Must Regulate Starbuck's Coffee
It is, after all, a dangerous weapon.
UPDATE:
In comments, Caleb's getting some static for carrying a .25.
I'm more concerned with his choice of coffee. Starbucks? Good lord, man, get yerself to a Dunkin' Donuts!

Un - Freakin' - Possible!
This could not have happened. Memphis banned guns in parks!
Weapons charge follows shooting
Guns are not allowed in Memphis parks, and that includes a sawed-off shotgun fired Sunday in a park near Raleigh and again in a neighborhood from a moving Mustang.
I almost linked from the Channel 3 website and said there was no mention of it in the Commercial Squeal, but after some due diligence, I found it. You won't find it on the front page, and you'll have to scroll a bit, but it's there.

This is What Happens When People Carry Guns!
Police on scene of shooting at East Memphis office building
Memphis police are investigating a shooting in East Memphis this afternoon.Four vs. one, but the one had a gun.
The incident happened about 3 p.m. at the Hobson Building at 5384 Poplar.
A jewelry salesman was leaving the building when he was attacked by four men who tried to rob him, said Joel Hobson of Hobson Realtors. The salesman pulled his gun and shot two of the men, Hobson said.
They did not get anything from the salesman, Hobson said.

Anothergate
Yeah, I know adding -gate to any political scandal is lame, but I possess no original thought today, so I'll just post a quick round-up of something that caught my attention.
These car dealerships that are being closed? You know, by the automakers nationalized bailed out by the government? It looks like only those who supported or are otherwise associated with the Republican party are the ones on the chopping block:
The basic issue raised here is this: How do we account for the fact millions of dollars were contributed to GOP candidates by Chrysler who are being closed by the government, but only one has been found so far that is being closed that contributed to the Obama campaign in 2008?
And they'd have gotten away with it too, if not for those pesky bloggers!
Hat tip to Insty.
More from Firehand and Bruce.

Oh Great
Another Memphis shooting by a permit holder.
Details are still coming in, but from what I gathered from witness statements on TV, the shooter, like the one at Trinity Commons, had been drinking.
Which renders the possession of a permit moot. You can't carry while drunk.
That won't stop the Commercial Appeal from posting up names of permit holders, of course. Nor will it keep anti-gun morons from blaming the gun for the crime.
And, of course, they'll leave out the whole drunk thing.

Students Robbed at Gunpoint
This can't be possible (emphasis mine): (Memphis, TN 1/15/2009) LeMoyne-Owen College is on lockdown after a robbery during class. A student tells us a man with a wig walked into a class on campus with a gun and demanded purses and wallets. 18 students were in class at the time.
Didn't he know it was a gun-free zone? How dare he!
Of course, if there were 19 (including the professor) potential concealed carriers in that classroom, would the guy have been so quick to go in and rob them?
Just askin'.

ATF Asked to do its Job
Sevier County authorities have solicited assistance from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to investigate the theft of four guns and other equipment from a Pigeon Forge police vehicle. Now, this is something I envision the ATF doing. Going after the bad guys.
Oh, and kudos to accurate reporting:
It’s legal for an individual to own an M-16 with federal permitting.Well, about as accurate as you can get in one sentance, anyway.

Really Good Info
Xavier has a great piece on situational awareness.
Gunfighting is not about guns, it's about fighting. You must be willing and able to fight, and fighting is about survival.Yup.

A - Ha!
Weapon ChoicePut that in your peace pipe and smoke it, Brady!Predominately handguns were used in the assaults on officers and all but one were obtained illegally, usually in street transactions or in thefts. In contrast to media myth, none of the firearms in the study was obtained from gun shows. What was available “was the overriding factor in weapon choice,” the report says.
There's more, more sobering information there, too (emphasis mine):
Among other things, the data reveal that most would-be cop killers:Remember that. If they won't hesitate to shoot a cop, they sure as hell won't hesitate to shoot you.--show signs of being armed that officers miss;
--have more experience using deadly force in “street combat” than their intended victims;
--practice with firearms more often and shoot more accurately;
--have no hesitation whatsoever about pulling the trigger. “If you hesitate,” one told the study’s researchers, “you’re dead. You have the instinct or you don’t. If you don’t, you’re in trouble on the street….”

Maturity Levels
Reading this post by Kim reminded me of something I had been kicking around in my head a bit.
The reason there is so much violence among young people today is their lack of maturity. Sometimes you'll hear "kids grow up quick these days" or some such hogwash. The exact opposite is true. Kids today don't have to take responsibility for anything any more.
Going through school they are protected from getting their feelings hurt by "speech codes" from kinder all the way through grad school. There's no fighting, no 'rasslin, no playing tag or dodgeball. You'd probably get expelled for dipping a girls ponytail in the inkwell.
Because of this, kids take any form of criticism as a personal attack, and, many times, respond physically. The reason for this immature behavior is because it is a natural response, one you learn to control. Of course, because they've never been allowed to "take it out back", they don't know how to control that urge. They don't know the consequences. Here's a quick story:
Back when I was a teenager, we were all gathered because one of my friends was going to fight a guy. They were going to use boxing gloves. So, waiting on the others to arrive me and another friend put them on to fool around a bit. It didn't last long. I hit him once in the side, he hit me upside the head, and that was it. We learned a valuable lesson that day: even with boxing gloves on, getting hit hurt.
You're not so keen on mixing it up once you know how it feels. You learn, and maybe adjust, your "fight or flight" response.
Learning about violence is part of growing up, a part most kids are not learning on their own. They see images on Tee Vee and figure that's how it is, so they don't think twice about beating someone with a ball bat, or using a knife or a gun.
It's time to replace what sounded good with what worked*.
* To paraphrase Thomas Sowell.

Cops, or Home Invaders?
I found this over at Too Lazy to Fail
The woman was upstairs while a group of men was crashing through a window, screaming that they were the FBI and demanding occupants tell them where to find the money.
It's getting harder and harder to know who to shoot these days. The thing is, those people may or may not have had a reason to believe the FBI was breaking in to their house in the wee hours of the morning.
I, not having a reason to believe such a thing, would have had to fire on the intruders. It would be my luck that it would have been the FBI, at the wrong house, and, well, you know what happens from there....
I admit, I didn't catch this one, even though it happened in my own back yard.
It happens so often these days I pretty much ignore the news. Unless they manage to get the facts in a sound bite, it's just another murder/home invasion/carjacking in Memphis.
