Memphis City Council OKs police living beyond Shelby County line(emphasis mine)
After weeks of studying the issue following a controversial November vote, the council on Tuesday approved 8-5 allowing new police hires to live within 20 miles outside of the Shelby County line if they pay an annual fee of $1,400.
And, because we can't have Memphis doing dumb shit all by itself, we now have this:

A lawsuit, you say? Someone pointing out that the annual fee is Just Plain Stupid, you say?
Not hardly:
Bailey claims the move is a way to hire more white officers[headdesk]

I'm so freakin' glad I live in DeSoto County. I cannot wait to get as far away from Memphis as possible.
Where I live, cops can get free (or at least VERY reduced) rent at a lot of apartment buildings. That is, of course, if they are one of the ones that drive the cop car home at night.
The decrease in criminal activity, or at least the perception of increased renter safety, justifies higher rents which more than offset the benefit to the cop.
