Not So Hippie

You are 16% hippie.

Ok, you conservative soul. Do you even believe in global warming? Loosen that necktie a little, and try some organic food. It actually does taste better. And go to a farmer's market--they're fun.

Are you a hippie?

Happy 100th Anniversary, Boy Scouts!

Quite a milestone, isn't it? Not every day a venerable staple of society like the Boy Scouts turns 100.

So, seeing as Our President is the Honorary Chairman, he's going to show up and say a few words, right?

Wrong:

President Barack Obama, the honorary chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, will not speak in-person before the group on Wednesday at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia, as part of the organization's 100th anniversary celebration. However, the president is sending a videotaped message to the scouts for Wednesday, the same day he will be in Manhattan to tape an appearance for ABC TV’s talk show “The View.”

Are You Ready for Some Football?

I'm gonna keep using that line 'till the NFL says I can't, like they did the words "Super" and "Bowl". Oops.

ANYway, the Hall of Fame game is less than two weeks away, the Titans have lost their running backs coach to USC, and Lane Kiffin is is probably the most hated man in Tennessee sports.

Even in light of this, I had high hopes for the Titans this year. But during the offseason Vince Young got into a slap fight in Dallas, Gerald McRath got suspended for juicing unknown violations of PED policy, Chris Simms got busted for driving while stoned, defensive heart and soul Keith Bulluck left for the Giants, and 2010 first-round pick Derrick Morgan got arrested for driving on a suspended license.

Things are looking rough for my beloved Bengals Titans. At least, if you go to a game, you'll get good food from a nice, clean establishment. Or not:

Tennessee

Bridgestone Arena
Nashville Predators
Vendors with critical violations: 59%

Inspection report excerpt: Nashville inspectors, who also score vendors, gave the facility's lowest score -- 75 -- to a vendor with three critical and nine non-critical violations.

FedExForum
Memphis Grizzlies
Vendors with critical violations: 4%

Inspection report excerpt: Toxic items were improperly stored at one location.

LP Field
Tennessee Titans
Vendors with critical violations: 62%

Inspection report excerpt: Nashville inspectors, who also score vendors, gave the facility's lowest score -- 74 -- to a vendor with three critical and 10 non-critical violations.
Kudos to Memphis! (that sure feels nice to say)

And if you think that's bad, check out Florida.

Area blogger getting back into the mix

Xspectre8 is back: (emphasis mine)

You won’t see any advertising on my website as long as I can afford to keep it going. That way the reader will know that my bizarro opinions are strictly mine and not supported by a sponsor. For example, I hate Beretta and Taurus handguns, but I love GLOCK pistols and Saiga rifles. There ya’ go.
Just had to go there, didn't ya? =)

Quote of the Day

Because this weekend was a whirlwind and I can't think of anything, I'll take this from Les Jones:

WizBang asks: of Kerry and Bush, whose income taxes indicate a higher level of charitable giving over the years, as a percentage of income? Answer: Bush, by a factor of roughly 10 to 1. Kerry didn’t just cross over to the other side of the street. He hopped in Teresa’s Gulfstream and flew to the other side of the Atlantic.
No word on when charges of swiftboating gulfstreaming Kerry will surface.

Las Vegas Review - Journal Sues the Internets

Well, the parts that link to their website, anyway:

According to news reports, Righthaven LLC [parent company of above mentioned "newspaper"] has reportedly filed lawsuits against 75 other political websites and/or blogs without prior contact or attempt at resolution. The sites include FreeRepublic.com, the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
The Armed Citizen is one of the best resources in the fight for gun rights, let's hope some national organization that advocates gun rights gets their legal eagles on the case.

A Message to Veterans

This comes via Heli Gunner Tom, a Vietnam vet and blogger:

"Today, people think they are being trendy and paying for coffee or something for the next guy in line. They call it "PAYING IT FORWARD." Well, the TRUE inventors of paying it forward are ........VETERANS!

....

So the next time someone [a vet] says he doesn't want any freebies or handouts, remind him or her. If you served, you already paid for it in advance.

God bless you
Nick
You'd be surprised how prevalent that feeling is among veterans. I know a lot of bloggers and readers are veterans, I have to ask: how many have registered with the VA? Like Tom says:
Get, study, learn and research to get ALL OF YOUR LEGAL BENEFITS, and now! Your spouse can benefit too, with the 'hidden' CHAMPVA provisions that the VA does NOT want you all to know about. Please, do your homework, now!
In the interest of full disclosure, I am not yet registered with the VA. I figured, being retired military meant I didn't have to. But, after a conversation with my uncle (retired Navy), I'm going to go ahead and register.

I won't be taking anything away from someone else. Besides, I've already paid for it.

Wrong, Again

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous, in reacting to the resignation of Shirley Sherrod, says the following:

Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race.
No, racism is not the abuse of power, it is a belief one or more races are inferior to others.

When you take that attitude and act on it, then you have abuse of power. It's called discrimination. This time it was based on race. Other times it can be based on sex, religion, skin color...

Or gun ownership. Continue Reading

Congressman Rangel Reintroduces Bill To Reinstate Military Draft

WASHINGTON - Congressman Charles Rangel on Thursday introduced H.R. 5741, a bill that would reinstate a compulsory military draft, or alternative national service, during times of war, for men and women, aged 18 to 42, who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
42? Wow.

Mid South TEA Party Responds to NAACP Resolution Labeling TEA Party Activists as “Racist”.

via email:

The Organizers of the Mid South TEA Party unanimously denounce the NAACP’s resolution meant to “repudiate the racism of the TEA Parties”. We will not be intimidated. We will not fall in line to a political correctness dictated by their organization that has repeatedly worked to dictate the speech of others yet regularly overlooking the “plank” in their own eye.

The Mid South TEA Party cites their own efforts to reach out to the black community as far back as twelve months ago. This effort was not reciprocated in any manner and the hypocrisy of the NAACP resolution is blatantly clear when all the facts are considered.

During July of 2009, several attempts via phone were made to contact Dr. LaSimba Gray, pastor of New Sardis Baptist Church and president of the local chapter of the Rainbow Coalition. We encountered a MoveOn.org Memphis representative, known to us as “Pastor J.,” at the Memphis office of Senator Corker. In both cases, there was an attempt on our part to parlay a meeting in an effort to find common ground within our communities. We asked for a meeting with each of these men to articulate our motivations. Both men promised a meeting for this purpose. Neither meeting took place. Nevertheless, we have always remained open to individuals of any race.

When the majority of Americans embraced and elected a black candidate named Barack Obama for President of The United States, many people from all sectors of our society thought that a nefariously held barrier had fallen. Unfortunately, the barrier has only grown due to the over use of the “race card”.

We challenge the NAACP to clean up messes within the community they purport to represent before criticizing others. They should reverse their position and denounce the DOJ dismissal of the New Black Panthers voter intimidation case. They should admonish those that practice race baiting political opportunism while claiming to be leaders in the black community.

Furthermore, we challenge the black leaders in Memphis or on the national scene to meet with us in good faith. We are willing to work together to better understand one another to find common ground and to bridge the divides that exist among us. If these leaders refuse to meet, then it should be clear to all onlookers in which group racism flourishes and continues to undermine our community and nation.

Quote of the Day

From Sebastian, on the NRA- conservative dustup, because it's what I'm thinking at the moment:

This pisses me off, because if you weaken NRA, you weaken the Right to Bear Arms. There is no group that’s going to step up, or is capable of stepping up, and taking their place.
At times I wonder if some conservatives are really pro-gun, or just using us as useful idiots.

No Veterans' Preference on Capitol Hill

Pissed off, but not surprised:
(emphasis mine)

Veterans who apply for jobs on Capitol Hill aren’t receiving critical federal job-placement benefits because Congress has largely exempted itself from a law that aids post-military employment for vets, a new congressional report shows.
"Thank you for your service, son. Now we'll help you find a job, just not here."

Markley’s Law

The adage that any Internet discussion regarding firearm owners will eventually mention male genitalia.
Or, to paraphrase Godwin's law:
As an online discussion of gun owners’ rights grows longer, the probability of an ad hominem attack involving penis size approaches 1.

Michael Yon, Not Getting My Support

Yeah, he's ex-Special Forces, yeah, he pays his way into places of danger, but Michael Yon can do all that without my support.

You see, not only did he sign on the the Mexican gun canard, and called those of us who questioned him fanatics.

He also says many who blog about the war are Milkooks, who should be squeezed out.

Well, I really don't consider myself a "Mil blogger Kook" as I've retired and moved on the Veteran stuff, but I remember what it was like to be a soldier. I remember knowing how my back was covered, whether it was in war, or at the bar on Friday night. I also remember how we treated those who didn't have our backs.

I'll let the Major say it for me:

My "from the hip" response: Eat shit, mike yon. Eat. My. Shit.

My well reasoned and thought out response: Mikey, Milbloggers made you as popular as you are. If it weren't for sites like Blackfive and Mudville Gazette, you would be the saddest panda in Iraq right now, living hand to mouth on the mercies of people who had not (yet) had enough of your silly shit and tantrums to stop putting up with you. You may have been taking good pictures, but nobody would have noticed, were it not for us "milkooks."
Thanks to SayUncle for most of the links on this, and to Kevin, for linking the Major, who has a comment on Michael's military experience:
I have spent more time looking for a quiet place to shit than you have soldiering.
Never underestimate a nice, quiet, dump. Or a pissed off soldier.

International Small Arms Destruction Day

This Administration supports it.

Today, the U.S. State Department announced its support for the United Nations' “International Small Arms Destruction Day.” The State Department, under the leadership of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, calls this ridiculous event part of the United States’ ongoing efforts to support the “rule of law around the world” and boasts of spending more than $130 million to destroy “1.4 million small arms and light weapons.” A press release from the State Department says this money was spent at the behest of the anti-gun United Nations to reduce the impact of “illicit flows of small arms and light weapons.”
But, they'll never try to control our guns, nosirree.

Commercial Fail

Much like Uncle's wondering why Wendy's was using a song about drugs and masturbation, I have to wonder why Jeep is using the song "God's Gonna Cut You Down" in their latest spot. They don't use the lyrics, of course, but if they did...

Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light
Isn't Jeep part of a bailout corporation?
