Memorial Day 2010

On fame's eternal camping ground
Their silent tents to spread,
And glory guards, with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead.

Chelada, Quick and Easy

Like Les Jones says, If Lovin’ Beer Mixed with Clam and Tomato Juice is Wrong, I Don’t Wanna Be Right

I know I'm risking my beer geek cred, but I agree, Bud Light Chelada is pretty good. It's also expensive. A 24 oz can costs at least a dollar more than a regular beer. You can, however, mix your own. Here's what you need:

1 pint (or larger) glass

1 -12 oz Bud Light Lime

4 oz Clamato, more or less to taste.

Simply pour, give a slight stir, and enjoy.

This will get you to a close approximation of the pre-mixed stuff, you can jazz it up as you see fit, but be advised, Bloody Mary mix, V8 or regular tomato juice will not give you the same result.

Beer blogger/author/drinker Lew Bryson on the impending sale of Pabst Brewing:

Give Pabst a home, Mr. Metropoulos; give it back its soul. And maybe give it back some hops while you're at it.
Lets just hope they don't "triple hops brew" it. =P

Rule of Law City?

Not all of California is totally bat shit crazy - take Costa Mesa, for instance:

Costa Mesa declares itself a 'rule of law' community

The Costa Mesa City Council has voted unanimously to declare itself a "rule of law" community, further widening the divide over illegal immigration in the central Orange County city.

Of course, not everybody is happy about a government saying it will obey the law:
Costa Mesa 'Rule of Law' decision prompts outcry

More immigrant rights' organizations are publicly condemning Costa Mesa's self-designation as a "Rule of Law City," with one group calling on residents to evacuate the city.

Here's the quote that gets me, though, and one the media keeps pushing (emphasis mine):

In a statement, Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said, "The cancer of intolerance that has afflicted Arizona with the passage of SB1070 has now metastasized to the City of Costa Mesa. By declaring itself a "Rule of Law City," Costa Mesa has voted to make life a living hell for immigrants and their families."
No, you ignorant twit, it voted to deal with illegal immigrants, not legal ones.

I doubt you will find any clear-thinking American who is against immigration. After all, this nation was founded by immigrants. But to label the fight against illegal immigration as "anti immigrant" and "racist" is disingenuous and manipulative, and is the true source of the division and hatred surrounding this issue.

NFL Power Rankings for 2010

Peter King posts up his take at how the NFL will stack up this year. I don't know if this was his assignment, or he just got so forkin' stoned he forgot what month it was:

1. Green Bay
2. San Diego
3. Baltimore
4. Indianapolis
5. New Orleans
6. Miami
7. New York Jets
8. Carolina
9. New York Giants
10. Dallas
11. Seattle
12. Pittsburgh

ON THE PLAYOFF BUBBLE

13. Minnesota
14. New England
15. Philadelphia
16. Atlanta
17. Houston
18. Denver
19. San Francisco

WAIT 'TIL NEXT YEAR

20. Washington
21. Jacksonville
22. Arizona
23. Cincinnati
24. Detroit
25. Chicago
26. Kansas City
27. Tennessee
28. Oakland
29. Cleveland
30. Tampa Bay
31. Buffalo
32. St. Louis

Ok, I take it back. Maybe he knew what month it was, but thought it was 2004.

I mean, seriously? The Titans in at 27 while the Panthers are up at eighth? He put them there, by the way, because of the strong three game winning streak they enjoyed after they switched quarterbacks, unlike the Titans, who went 8-2 after they switched theirs.

Nice, consistent train of thought there.

For the record, I put us in at around 12 to start the season. Many question marks on the team, but with no appreciable losses* and some key additions, we will be in the playoff hunt at the end of the year.

* - we haven't lost Bulluck yet, so I can say that. Continue Reading

Number of Colleges Allowing Concealed Carry on Campus Doubles

Via email, emphasis mine:

I don't know if you have seen anything about this, but the number of colleges allowing concealed carry on campus has more than doubled this week. Especially as this has not received any media coverage, I feel that this is a substantial news issue that should be covered and would be of interest to your readers. I've gone into more detail about this below, but feel free to email or call me at the address below for any additional information.

Prior to this week, only twelve colleges in the entire nation explicitly allowed carry of a firearm: The ten public colleges of Utah, Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia and Colorado State University. Following a substantial ruling to remove the ban at the University of Colorado, the fourteen colleges in the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) voted to rescind their current ban and allow any licensed adult with a concealed carry permit to exercise that right while on campus. While I cannot find any direct news articles about it, you may link to the revised policy at:

http://www.cccs.edu/SBCCOE/Policies/SP/PDF/SP19-10.pdf

This action alone more than doubles the number of universities and colleges allowing concealed carry from twelve to twenty-six.

In addition, one of the two community colleges in Colorado not part of the CCCS, Aims Community College, has scheduled a meeting to make the same changes in their policies. You may view an article about this at:

http://www.greeleytribune.com/article/20100511/NEWS/100519933/1007

This dramatic shift follows in the wake of a ruling against a similar policy at the University of Colorado. Members of Students of Concealed Carry on Campus (Concealedcampus.org) and the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (Rmgo.org) originally filed suit against the University of Colorado claiming that state law preempted any governmental entity, including the Board of Governors, from banning concealed carry license holders from possessing a firearm on campus. While the initial ruling went against the firearms activists, it was reversed on appeal:

http://www.thedenverdailynews.com/article.php?aID=8082

The Colorado State University (CSU) Board of Governors originally voted to reverse the long standing policy of allowing students with state-issues concealed carry permits to possess firearms on campus shortly after the initial ruling:

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_14454241

Over the last seven years while the policy had been in place, crime had rapidly decreased and not a single instance of gun misuse by a licensee has been reported. The new ban was opposed by CSU’s student government, the county sheriff, the editorial boards of both the campus newspaper and the Colorado Springs Gazette, as well as more than 1,000 students who signed a petition against the ban in just a few short days. Larimer County Sheriff Jim Aberdeen, was so outraged by its passage that he told local media that he intended to undermine it by refusing to book violators of the ban into his jail, which the CSU police department utilizes for arrests. In the wake of the recent ruling however, Colorado State University has reversed it's ban on firearms.

http://www.denverpost.com/headlines/ci_15027249

This issue will likely continue to be fought in court. For the time being however, it appears that some Colorado students and faculty will be allowed an option for self defense and that some criminals will no longer have a governmental guarantee that their potential victims will be unarmed.

LATEST CMP SALES NEWS:

AP .30-06 M2 BALL: The .30-06 AP ammo that we now have available includes headstamps: AYR, SL, TW, and LC. Dates of manufacture vary from the 1940s to the 1950s. Most of the ammo is corrosive, but some may be non-corrosive. The ammo is packaged in 8 round M1 Garand enbloc clips, in bandoleers, in spam cans. Purchases of multiple cans will be shipped in what appear to be the original wooden crates (two spam cans per crate).

Cans and crates will be selected luck of the draw as to the headstamp. 4C3006U202-192P. Single spam can (192 rounds). $60.00. S&H at $8.95 per can. CMP will not ship any AP ammo to Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands. The following states do have laws regarding AP ammo, but the laws are unclear as to whether or not they apply to .30-06 AP ammo, since this ammo was designed for use in a rifle and not in a handgun. Customers from these states should be aware that even though .30-06 AP may be currently sold in their states, there is a risk of arrest and prosecution for the possession of .30-06 AP, depending on how their local law enforcement officers interpret their state definition of "Armor Piercing or Restricted ammo".

These states are: California, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Tennessee, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Nevada.

Residents of these and all other states should check your state and local laws on ammunition sales before ordering. Even in states where state law does not prohibit AP, there may be cities within that state that prohibit or restrict possession of AP ammo. See the ammunition tab on Estore at https://estore.odcmp.com.
