Angus G. McQuilken says : Let chiefs have say on gun permits

Police chiefs are in the best position to know the background of applicants in their community, which is why state law provides our local chiefs with the job of determining an applicant's overall suitability for a license to carry concealed weapons.
Oh, really? My police chief/sheriff doesn't know me from Adam. How on earth would he be able to determine my suitability? Maybe do an background check?

So, why does dear Angus like this idea so much, anyway?
As a coauthor of the Massachusetts Gun Control Act of 1998, which remains the nation's toughest and most effective gun control law, I can tell you that investing police chiefs with this discretion was a very intentional decision.
That's why. It may be one of the toughest, but effective? Lets just take a look, shall we? I guess effectiveness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
Getting such a license should not be easy or automatic,
It isn't. At least not in states that believe their citizens are mature, responsible adults. It involves training, background checks, and governmental oversight.

I know you're just standing up for what you wrote ten years ago, but how hard is it to admit it didn't work?

He should take a look (and think twice) at San Francisco Chief Heather Fong who has broken the Departmental Rules for the past five years, and has skipped-out on what ever other cop must do on a semiannual basis - complete pistol qualification...
She's a hand-picked (by coakhead sleaze-Mayor Gavin Newsome) idiot know-nothing puppet who has no grasp of what officers have to contend with on a daily basis.
Just great, our elite leader.
