Hill AFB Finds Their Missing M-16s

In a follow up and favorable resolution to this post, it appears that the missing M-16s have been returned:

Hill AFB: Man who snatched M-16s returns them to security officials

A man who took a case of M-16 assault rifles that fell from the back of a Humvee on Tuesday afternoon at Hill Air Force Base arranged to return the guns to security officials on Friday morning.

The man called base officials from a pay phone and left the guns behind a horse trailer on base, a Hill spokesman said. The man, who did not identify himself and may still face charges if he is found, also left a letter of apology. It's still unclear why the man took the box of 12 guns, worth up to $5,000 each on the black market, after the case fell from a truck belonging to an as-of-yet unidentified unit at Hill. The incident occurred about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Reading the rest, it looks like there was plenty of incompetence to go around.

That's just retarded.

The guy saw a military style packing crate in the road. He obviously thought "finders keepers" and picked it up thinking it may be something useful to him or valuable to be sold to a surplus store.

An unethical, but not overtly criminal person, when he realized the furor the missing guns was causing and the trouble he could be in if caught with them or trying to sell them, he got scared and anonymously turned them back in.

This isn't rocket surgery.

If he is found out, it will turn out to be a government employee who worked on the base and will swear "I don't know what I was thinking, I just saw it there and didn't want to leave it lying there so I picked it up."

The guy should be ashamed of himself for his lack of integrity, but the Army should be grateful that it wasn't picked up by someone a little less scrupulous.
