It's too bad the only person I wanted to vote for dropped out of the race. Lots of folks are upset, as they should be. It was bound to happen, though, for a number of reasons.
He wasn't well known: Although he was an actor, the public didn't have prior knowledge on what Fred's convictions were. Try as he might, he couldn't get his message out. Of course, it would have helped for him to get media coverage, which never happened.
It wasn't his turn: I hear political analysts say that a lot, and I'm sure there's some validity to it. Fred just resigned from his TV show and jumped into the ring. Most movers and shakers had already lined up their choices, and Fred wasn't one of them.
He's too normal: Plain talk and not kowtowing to the media didn't score him any points with the folks who would get him exposure. Media folks, that is.
Truly, I doubt he was going hard to get the spot. I really think he knew all the above and played his hand to get the Vice-Presidential gig. Just look back on his TV appearances. Fred was the one you didn't mess with. As the VP candidate, he can pimp-slap his opponents and the media without any of it getting on his running mate.
Getting the VP nod would also take care of those other things I'd mentioned above. Folks would get to know Fred, get used to his "young" wife, and see where he stands on the issues. Don't knock me on mentioning his wife, I had a guy tell me that his wife wouldn't vote for Fred because of the age difference.
At any rate, the race has changed. Let's hope Cthulhu isn't our best choice.
UPDATE: More here via Insty.
I would start up with "Thompson 2012", but the world will end before he'd take office, so why bother?
