Bipartisan Majority of the U.S. Senate Votes in Favor of National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity
Fairfax, Va. – Today, by a margin of 58-39, a bipartisan majority of the U.S. Senate voted in favor of an amendment offered by Senator John Thune to provide interstate recognition of right-to-carry permits.
I'm beginning to like "Hope and Change".

“While we are disappointed that the 60 vote procedural hurdle was not met, the vote shows that a bipartisan majority agrees with the NRA,” said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox.
Ah, well. Time to see who voted how I guess. Onwards and upwards.

Looks like two republicans voted against this, Lugar and Mel Martinez.
While of all people Harry Reid voted for it,of course with NRA support for his re-election in Nevada.
Thune stated that he will not leave this one alone,and it will be back for a vote.

The NRA's press release is worded (spun?) in a very positive way that certainly leads one to jump to the conclusion we did.
Bottom line tho: it becomes a telling factor for those in the Senate, I'm sure to affect their NRA grade and reelection chanes. In some ways, that's more important.
I just hope this pushed the Democrat party further away from gun control as a party issue.
A while back we sort of discussed a TN Senate bill in the works that led one to think the author was unclear whether anyone who had voluntarily been admitted to a mental hospital could ever get a TN handgun carry permit. I and my bro did contact the bill's author and expressed the idea if he wanted to address this situation to word it differently or just amend the current disqualifier.
This has been addressed and effective Jan 1st, 2010 the TN code, by SB 2236, has been amended to a disqualification in line with the Fed law and ATF regulations. The code has been amended as follows:

As enacted, clarifies that a person may not obtain a handgun carry permit if the person has been "judicially committed to a mental institution" instead of "committed to or hospitalized in a mental institution"; requires that certain notice be provided to persons detained for evaluation or treatment; revises various related provisions.- Amends TCA Title 4; Title 8; Title 16; Title 33; Title 38; Title 39; Title 40; Title 49; Title 54; Title 55 and Title 65.
Title 39 deals with weapons and carry permits.
This is in line with the Federal disqualification for the purchase of a firearm, wherein a voluntary hospitalization is not a disability.
Hope this had been helpful and hope all can understand my rambling words.
Also wanted to add I went on a nine day, eleven state motorcycle tour on the 5th of July and my TN permit was good in ten of eleven states. All of them except the People's Republik of Kalifornia either have a reciprocal agreement of recognize TN permits. A standardization by the Federal government would be helpful to say the least however.
