Is Tennessee Trying to Register Handguns? Updated

Via SayUncle, we find the great State of Tennessee is requiring handgun safety instructors to fill out this form, containing the attendees drivers license number, as well as the make and serial number of the gun used to take the course.

There is also a place to note whether the gun belonged to the student or not.

I'm heading to a couple gun shops today to see what else I can find out about this before I write my state rep/congressman.

Update - Unc has news:

She stated that her office is in the process of issuing retraction letters regarding the requirement of serial numbers from carry permit instructors in the rosters that are required from each school. TDOS is aware that the requirement of serial numbers could be construed as an attempt to create a handgun registry which, while not the department’s intent, is nonetheless unacceptable under the law. So they are communicating their intentions not to require serial numbers.

Gotta love the Internet. =)

Writing your Congressman won't do much good since this is a state matter. The only time I've seen federal folks weigh in on state issues like this is when the issue was brought up by a party leader or larger donor.

Focus on your State Representative, State Senator, and any other elected officials with jurisdiction over the office that's requesting the information. Those are the people who can help.

Yeah, I meant state senator.

Wait a minute, how do you know I'm not a larger donor? =)
