That title belongs to Earl Morrall.
You probably haven't heard of him. Even though we're all focused on the '72 Dolphins and the possibility of them having company at the top of the heap, I haven't heard Earl's name called once, even though ten of those Dolphin victories came when Earl was the QB.
I first learned of him from my dad, who worked with Earl at a plant in Michigan (Either Bay City or Ypsilanti, don't remember which). He was Johnny Unitas' back up at the time. Back in those days, NFL players weren't millionaires and held some sort of job during the offseason.
My dad brought me an autographed picture of him. I wished I still had it, but as any parent knows, don't give a 9 year old anything you're not willing to see destroyed. It's too bad, because his NFL career was a great one. Go check it out.
The Wiki article says it's a "back handed compliment" to call him the greatest backup ever. I guess the author was never involved in any sort of teamwork. Earl was the consummate professional. His 21 years in the NFL are a testament to that.
