Nice analogy from Rachel Lucas:
In days of yore on the plains of Africa, ridgebacks were used in groups to hunt lions. No one had a problem with those ridgebacks carrying a full set of teeth; they were necessary to keep the dangerous lions at bay. But would anyone have demanded that all the ridgebacks not hunting lions have their teeth removed? There are other threats, after all. Every ridgeback should have every tool she needs to protect herself and her pack. If she’s a bad dog, and bites people or animals she has no right to bite, then maybe you yank out her teeth to protect future innocent victims. But if she only bites attackers or creatures she is going to eat, you best just leave well enough alone or she might bite YOUR ass.
