Via Sebastian comes another so-called ally in the war on guns speaking out against "assault weapons"*.
Joaquin Jackson of the NRA says "assault weapons" should only be in the hands of the police and military.
I agree, five rounds is plenty for hunting. Needing only one is bullshit. Limiting any rifles capacity is also bullshit. I wonder if the one he's holding in that NRA ad holds more than five?
Sebastian's link has further information on this issue.
* From now on, I'm putting quotation marks around this political construct of a term.

I wouldn't go that far
If anything, this is a reason to join the NRA. If you want to get people who say things like this off the board, it's hard to do that when you can't vote in the board elections. Jackson wasn't speaking for the NRA when he made those statements, he was speaking for himself. Because those kinds of statements can damage the cause as a whole, it's important for people to stay engaged. It might feel great to say "screw the NRA" and go off and join a more hard core group, but that's not going to accomplish anything other than dividing us, and swinging the political pendulum back to the anti-gunners like it was in the early 90s.

True
He said what he said, and I do think the interviewer set him up, somewhat.
However, he did use his NRA membership and position to establish his credibility. You make some excellent points. If I were a member, I'd give lots of thought to voting his butt out next election. Or just put him in a room with the Nuge for a few minutes. :-)
In the interest of full disclosure, I let my NRA membership lapse about 12 years ago. I just didn't see the benefit (at that time) and they kept pestering me for money. Hopefully we'll have more truly reasoned discourse over all this.

NRA Membership
The only way to make sure that NRA Board members represent the interests of the members is to vote. I was regularly attending the Annual Meetings until my oldest daughter started having dance recitals the same weekends as the meetings. I was shocked every year when the number of ballots returned was announced during the meeting. With some 3 to 4 million members, it is disgraceful that only some 25,000 members cast votes for the Board. I understand that one has to be a life member or a 5 consecutive year annual members but you gotta believe that more than 25,000 people fit that description. I urge everyone to join NRA an your state NRA affiliate association, then be an active member. The only way to change something you don't like about an organization it to join it and be a part of the solution.
