Looking for Something in a Nine

At some time in the (hopefully) near future I plan on getting a new pistol, so I'm looking for suggestions.

It needs to have the following features:

Full size
Minimum capacity 12+1
Minimum caliber 9mm +P
Stainless
Under $500 if possible
I prefer wheelguns, but I also know the ability to fire off 12/14/16 rounds without reloading is a Good Thing.

I had a S&W Model 6906 once upon a time. I really liked it, but traded it to my Dad for his service revolver. He was talking about swapping it for an automatic, and I just couldn't let what I considered an heirloom go. So, I got the revolver, he got the 6906, and all was well...then he promptly traded it for a .38 snubbie. Boy, I have to admit, I didn't see THAT coming.

Anyway, the 6906 is no longer in production, and I'm sure there's better out there for the money.

So, what should it be?

Other than stainless, it fits the bill. Don't need stainless with a glock though ;)

but the do make them.

Springfield XD meets all of your req's and then some!

Go for a Springfield XD. I've got a 4" model in .40 cal. and I love it. The ergonomics are outstanding - it fits your hand like a glove and is balanced perfectly. I've had mine for 3 years and have never had a failure of any kind. The trigger pull is smooth and easy, and it is definitely more accurate than I am! If you're an accesory junkie, there are plenty available for XD's. In my area (Raleigh, NC) you can get a new XD for $400 to $600, depending on the exact model you choose. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture! Overall the XD's are great pistols and you won't be sorry if you buy one. (And no, I don't work for them!)

THIS IS BAITING

Asking gun guys a question like this is PURE baiting. All over the internet people pretend to ask for "suggestions" for buying their next gun, when in the end, ALL of the "suggestions" are predictable (glock fans/sig fans/hk fans/1911 fans/xd fans etc come out of the woodwork) and the person trolling for suggestions will do what they want anyway.

Thus, the entire premise of the question is flawed.

I would hope you would consider this basic common sense I've learned from 15 years of gun shooting/collecting/hoarding:

you will learn to appreciate VARIETY in your arsenal, EVEN variety of brands within the specifications you cited. Since you like semi autos with those 5 specs, don't plan on only having ONE gun like that. Don't limit yourself to JUST "mainstream" guns either, like most guys do. Many of them are so overpriced it's funny.

Many guys try to find the "perfect" gun based on certain criteria. The reality is that your criteria and preferences will change. Many guys constantly sell their guns if something isn't "perfect." This is really stupid. They don't have the ability to appreciate the positive qualities of 4 different 9mms in their safe.

If I cite a specific gun to "suggest," I'll sound like so many of the predictable folks who push their pet gun.

9mm

Voolfie

From the "Free Advice Is Worth Exactly What You Paid For It" department:

Notwithstanding the fact that modern ammo can make up for a multitude of sins, the U.S. discovered way back in 1902 that the .38 (9mm) just isn't adequate for the job of stopping a determined attacker.

This lesson has sadly been re-learned over in the sandbox where it is generally acknowledged that any automatic-pistol cartridge that doesn't start with at least a '4' is nigh upon useless.

But if you've got your heart set on a .38" projectile, get yourself one o' them Smith & Wesson 8-shot .357s. A 125 grain SJHP will stop a fight quicker than anything else out there.

Voolfie, that is the case with ball ammo. JHPs help a lot. Unlike the military, we're n.ot limited to FMJs

MAC,

I haven't owned an automatic in over 10 years. I'm not a fan of any one make, hence my request for advice.

I want the fans to come out on the side of their favorite. I want it done in this forum, which hopefully has more diversity in opinion than the gun boards I usually read.

I'm hoping for someone to step out of the box and put a new perspective on old thinking. On that note, what non-mainstream guns would you recommend?

Voolfie,

I'm not dead set on 9mm. If I do go with a 9, it would have to handle +P pressures. I'm more interested in capacity, so a .40 or 10mm isn't out of the picture. Even a .45, if it can hold 12.

Cz-75 stainless

Check it out. 16+1, stainless, works like a champ, mags are cheap, MSRP of $565 which means it sells for about $500.

To CZ or not To CZ

Go with the Baby Desert Eagle in 9mm or .40 cal. The Beagle, while based on the CZ, has tighter tolerances and better accuracy. A pure joy to shoot and comes in at under $500 depending on the finish you want.

So Far...
... so good.

I'm glad you all mentioned the CZ and Baby Eagle. Those weren't on my mind at the time.

Hopefully we'll get some more in here soon.

EAA Witness. I'd suggest the 10mm but the .40 S&W is a decent choice as well. You'd be looking at around $350 or so at the gun store. It holds 15 in the mag for the 10mm & .40 S&W versions. It also comes in .45 acp. But I'd suggest the 10mm or .45 version partly because they'll take conversion kits in .40 S&W & 9mm whereas the 9mm & .40 S&W won't handle the 10mm or .45 conversion kits.

They also have a higher priced line called the Elite series. Most are close to $700 msrp but the Witness Elite Match has an msrp of $579 which translates to $499 or so at my friendly neighborhood FFL. The Match is a single action with a slightly longer (4.75" versus 4.5") barrel & some other features.

But look into the Witness line as it may very well be the best bargain out there in a new autoloader.

I already HAVE "stepped out of the box"

You said:

Gimme a break here. I did A. "step out of the box," and B. "put a new perspective on old thinking."

I guess you didn't notice that I gave a perspective you probably WON'T get anywhere else, because guys just can't seem to fight the temptation to push their pet gun.

I absolutely did give a fresh perspective, and suggested that you get a VARIETY of nines. Don't treat buying a gun like you're trying to find a decent wife. Treat it like you're a polygamist, and the pool of "women" are almost all cooperative.

Good call, it goes on my short list. 15 rounds in 10mm? Damn skippy.
