Book Bleg

I've decided to introduce my kid to Heinlein this Christmas.

Other than Have Space Suit - Will Travel (the only one I remember reading), which of the other Heinlein Juveniles should I consider?

  2. You could try Starship Troopers, The Puppet Masters, or The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

I can't remember whether they were properly labelled as juveniles, but I read them as a teen and enjoyed them. I wouldn't mind re-reading them.

Further: Podykane of Mars and Farmer in the Sky were pretty obiously directed at teens, and they survived one read. However, I don't want to re-read them now.

  3. Space Cadet, Sixth Column, Between Planets, The Rolling Stones, The Star Beast, Tunnel in the Sky. I read all of those when I was a young teen.

Have Space Suit was the first I read (though much later in life). and ditto the Moon/Mistress suggestion.

  5. All of them. The only real question is what order is suitable based on the age of your kid. I like Starship Troopers, Have Spacesuit, Will Travel and Glory Road, but pretty much any of his under about 400 pages will work.

  6. Wot! 5 comments, and nobody's mentioned "Red Planet" yet? Couldn't tell you how many times I read that as a kid, other than it was a bunch.

  7. You didn't say how old your son is.

But I know I read Starship Troopers and The Puppet Masters when I was pretty young (middle school?). And Glory Road is phenomenal, period. (The sexual stuff will probably go over a young teen's head.)

As a side note, I think I started with Poul Anderson and I'm going to go into the basement and see if I can find my copy of Operation Chaos right now!

  9. Oh, yeah. My son is 14, but I consider him a "young" 14.

Unlike my girlfriends granddaughter, who is 11 going on 20....
